Eurasian eagle owl, Mannerheimintie, Helsinki. In 2011 a nest with three hatchlings was discovered on a building along one of the main avenues in Helsinki. The owlets are huge, as this is about the largest species of owl. This one had tried out its wings and landed on the sidewalk, drawing a crowd before it was collected by guards and put back in its nest.

Cormorant, Milford Sound

Fur seal, Milford Sound. This seal appeared to have climbed up a very steep-sided rock to take its nap.

New Zealand fantail, Okarito. This jumpy little bird stayed very close to me during the entirety of a short walk in the woods.

Weka, Punakaiki

New Zealand Robin, Routeburn Track. I started a solo day-hike on this famous track, but unfortunately for me the skies opened up before I'd gotten very far.
