WorldTravel > ChrisKean1  > South Asia > Bhutan, February-March 2007
Just a week and a half or so, but time enough to see Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and one or two places farther afield. The Punakha festival was clearly the highlight--vivid and memorable.

ChrisKean1 > Paro Rinpung Dzong, Paro. This was my first view of a Bhutanese dzong (fortress/religious center) as I was driven to the town from Paro airport.
ChrisKean1 > Laundry day, Paro Rinpung Dzong
ChrisKean1 > Central tower, Paro Rinpung Dzong
ChrisKean1 > Detail, "Wheel of Life," Paro Rinpung Dzong. In the lower section the Lord of the Dead sits with his mirror, judging people's deeds.
ChrisKean1 > Chained tiger, Paro Rinpung Dzong. The Mongol with his chained tiger is a popular motif.
ChrisKean1 > Decoration, Kyichu Lhakhang, Paro
ChrisKean1 > Prayer wheels, Kyichu Lhakhang
ChrisKean1 > Painting, Kyichu Lhakhang. This depicts one of the Guardians of the Four Directions, another popular motif.
ChrisKean1 > Father and son, Dungtse Lhakhang, Paro. The interior of Dungtse Lhakhang is very impressive, forming a mandala structure on different levels. Sadly for me, it is forbidden to take photographs inside any temple in Bhutan.
