Eurasian eagle owl, Mannerheimintie, Helsinki

It's nice to be able to spend more time here again after three years in Tajikistan. The country is amazingly unspoiled, with lakes and forest covering the majority of its area.

Olavinlinna, Savonlinna, Christmas Day. By now it was around 14:00 so getting dark again.

Eurasian eagle owl, Mannerheimintie, Helsinki. In 2011 a nest with three hatchlings was discovered on a building along one of the main avenues in Helsinki. The owlets are huge, as this is about the largest species of owl. This one had tried out its wings and landed on the sidewalk, drawing a crowd before it was collected by guards and put back in its nest.

Members of the Retuperä Voluntary Fire Brigade Band, Vappu celebration, Helsinki. The Walpurgis celebration is kicked off on April 30 when students using modern technology (alcohol, a cherry-picker and harnesses) are lowered onto the Havis Amanda statue in the Kauppatori square, to place a cap on her head. This is accomplished amid much drinking. Meanwhile, the Retuperä Voluntary Fire Brigade Band does its best to make the occasion memorable, occasionally (and despite their best efforts) playing the correct notes.
