Iceland, Slovenia, May-June 2005 : NYC-Reykjavik, then drove all around the north and west of beautiful Iceland for a week before flying to Klagenfurt, Austria for a week in Slovenia (plus a lightning trip to Italy). All but the last ten shots are from Iceland. Unfortunately I have lost my originals due to a technical problem, so these crudely edited shots are all I have.

Finland, September 2005- : It's nice to be able to spend more time here again after three years in Tajikistan. The country is amazingly unspoiled, with lakes and forest covering the majority of its area.

Prague, April 2006 : K and I spent Easter weekend in Prague this year. It has been among my favorite cities since I first lived there in 1990.

Ayasofya, June 2006 : With a couple of hours' stopover in Istanbul on my way to Yemen I paid a visit to the Church of the Holy Wisdom, among my favorite structures anywhere.

Koln, June 2006 : At the end of my trip to Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Jordan, I flew to Cologne (Koln) for a day on the way back to Helsinki. The day was a memorable one. My brother's family was visiting and the World Cup was underway, so I was able to enjoy the city in a way that was both intimate and global.

St. Petersburg, July 2006 : K. and I took the train to St. Petersburg for a long weekend. Clearly I really liked the Church of the Resurrection, as about half the photos are from there.

Italy, September 2006 : K and I spent a few days in Rome, then after a day in Pompeii we spent a week in Tuscany and Umbria. After K left I drove up to Ravenna for a day before heading to Ethiopia. Italy is the country that springs to mind whenever anyone asks me to name a favorite--an unfair question in any case.

Riga, Latvia, December 2006 : K and I flew from Finland to Latvia for two days and three nights. Riga is relatively small and its touristic area compact, but what there is packs a wallop--particularly, for us, the Art Nouveau facades not far from the Old Town. I've since had the chance to visit a couple more times.

Sicily (and Malta), March-April 2007 : A couple of nights in Malta (the first five photos) followed by a week and a half in Sicily with K. Sicily contains works of art from most of the cultures that have held sway in the Mediterranean--Greek and Byzantine, Roman, Arab, Norman, Spanish, etc. And the land itself is beautiful in the spring.

Ireland, May 2007 : K and I spent a couple of days in Glencolumbkille, headed south to meet some friends in Doolin, and then went to Birr and Kilkenny. We got good weather just about every day, and were thus able to see Ireland at its colorful best.

Riga, Latvia, August and September 2009 : Thanks to a new flight connection to Dushanbe, I've had the chance to spend some more time in Riga--half a day to visit a friend in August, and half a day with K in September. The climatic contrast with our initial visit in December 2006 could not have been greater.

Cotswolds, UK, April 2010 : Because of a change to my flight schedule from Dushanbe to New York, I had over 24 hours in the UK. I arrived at Gatwick, drove to the ancient sites at Stonehenge and Avebury, and headed up to the pretty Cotswolds area for the night and the next morning before driving back to Heathrow.

Bruges and Luxembourg City, May 2010 : Due to Eyjafjallajökull, I missed my connections from Europe to Dushanbe and had two days to see something. I picked nearby Bruges, and Luxembourg City was halfway from there to my eventual departure airport. It was cold and drizzly, but I enjoyed the unexpected couple of days and the train rides in between.

Istanbul, September-October 2010 : I was lucky to have a full week in September to revisit some favorite sights in Istanbul, and another day in October. Almost all of what follows is interior detail, so if tiles aren't your thing you may want to skip it.
