East and Southeast Asia Galleries

Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangkok, Winter 1996 : These are from scanned film negatives, and were taken with a point-and-shoot during a monthlong trip to Southeast Asia. I started in Bangkok, then flew to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and saw some of coastal Vietnam. I then flew to Cambodia and, after recovering from heat exhaustion, headed up to Angkor--certainly the highlight of the trip. Most of the pictures that follow were taken at Angkor, which I still consider the single most awe-inspiring cultural attraction I have yet seen. Finally, I headed to Vientiane, Laos but was unable to leave the capital.

Bali and Elsewhere, Summer 1999 : These are from scanned film negatives taken with a point-and-shoot. I didn't take many photos on this trip, which included stops in Tokyo, Singapore, Bali, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Bali was clearly the highlight.

Mongolia and Western China, Summer 2000 : These are from scanned film negatives taken with a point-and-shoot. In summer 2000 I traveled to Mongolia, and then from Xinjiang across the Torugart Pass to Kyrgyzstan and then to Uzbekistan. From there I went on by plane to the Caucasus countries and Istanbul. I have broken this trip up into three separate galleries in order to do each part justice. It remains among the best trips I have taken.

Myanmar (Burma), March 2007 : From Bhutan I flew to Myanmar, with time to see only Yangon, Bagan and the sights around Mandalay. The country is a treasurehouse.
