With only ten days we concentrated on South Island, first heading to the west coast and then back inland to lake country. The country is as stunning as everyone says.
Otira Viaduct (why-a-no-chicken?), near Otira. This viaduct was completed in 1999 because the surface road had been overly hazardous. We headed straight for the west coast from the airport near Christchurch, spending one night on the eastern side of the mountains before crossing this area to the coast.
